The Benton Harbor Fruit Market began operations
in 1860. It has moved from several different locations and now resides at 1891 Territorial Road
in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
It is still the world's largest 'cash-to-grower'
wholesale produce market with over 1,000 farm families registered to use the market.

The Benton Harbor Fruit Market has 205 semi-loading docks and sits on about 25 acres.
Over the years, the market has changed from one selling to large chain stores and numerous independant retailers, to one now serving specialty retailers, fruit stands, restauraunt chefs, and other much smaller buyers. Gone are the chain stores; they now purchase primarily from a heavily industrialized agricultural complex of factory-type farms and agribusiness corporations.
The Benton Harbor Fruit Market now focuses on three
different market segments: Growers marketing directly to buyers (which can be from as far away as

Florida); wholesalers bringing in produce from outside the region, as well as locally; and finally, the biggest and most important segment is our brokers who consolidate the
production of numerous growers to put together semi-loads of product to be sent to the
distribution centers for chain stores like Meijer's, Kroger, Safeway, Dominic's and Wal-Mart.
